Instagram Shopping – A new feature

We know you’ve been able to “shop” via Instagram for a while now, but the ability to set up a shop via Instagram is now available (for those that sell physical goods at least!)

There are several boxes you need to tick before you can set up shop, so to speak, including having a linked Facebook page and ensuring your Instagram account is a business account and not a personal account. To read the other requirements click here. 

So, what does this mean for the marketplace?

Well, Facebook /Instagram Shops will also allow small businesses to sell products through Instagram Direct, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and tag products during live broadcasts! Talk about engaging directly with your customers!

Shops are free and easy to create and, most importantly, they’re integrated across Facebook’s many apps, meaning once you’ve set up your shop, it’s going to be available on your Facebook Page and your Instagram profile (and accessible from stories and ads).

It’s the perfect tool for businesses to pivot online, and during a time when that’s needed more than ever, Facebook /Instagram have delivered a solution that helps.

Now more than ever we need to communicate

I’ve blogged in the past about the importance of saying “thank you” and whenever I meet a potential client (or an exisiting one) we discuss the importance of a variety of communications channels to get their message across to the public.

In this time of COVID-19, NOW more than ever we need to communicate. Staying silent isn’t an option.

That’s not to say that you should be “taking up airspace” online for the sake of it. What you’re saying needs to be planned, it needs to be considerate of your customers and their needs /wants and ultimately it needs to be informative.

Now’s the time to consider an auto-reply in your inbox, stating if you’re operating to regular hours or have adjusted your schedule due to the conditions. You’ll also want to share updates on your social media pages, including the best way customers can reach you.

You should communicate to your customers, suppliers and business contacts any changes to your operating hours and letting them know of any new services /products you have. Communication is key, you never know who you know who might need something your have in stock or that you provide as a service.

Finally, now’s the time to consider updating your header images for your social media pages. Something that summarises your hours (perhaps text overlayed on an image of your product or a relevant image relating to your services).

Three things you can do before Christmas

It’s little over a month until Christmas Day… You may be thinking, “What else can I do to capitalise on the Christmas rush?”, or you may be thinking – “Eeep, I’ve left it too late, what can I do?”

Never fear… we have three easy to achieve activities for you to get some cut-though before the big day!

ONE: Thank your customers for their patronage this year. If you’re an online store, send a discount code to your email database as a token of gratitude.

Keep your message festive, short, sharp and ensure you include any terms and conditions with your discount code. Now is NOT the time you want to get caught up in any legal matters.

TWO: If you have a bricks and mortar store, have candy canes at reception or at the service counter for your customers. You may also want to reward your customers who visit in December with complimentary services or bonus items.

THREE: Keep in mind people’s budgets. If you’re noticing a lack in sales, don’t panic. Remember there’s always the January sales period, start thinking about what discounts you can offer (now’s a good time to get a head start on stocktake).

If sales are exceeding expectations, why not tell your local press? Get the word out there about what you’ve achieved.

BONUS: Why not offer a percentage of profits to farmers in need or a local charity? You’ll be able to promote your donation once you’ve finalised the total. Think about a cause that’s close to your heart and get started now.

Liking the new Instagram changes…

We’ve all had some time to digest the fact that Instagram has removed likes in what is being called a “test” across seven countries. 

In case you missed it, no longer will you be able to see how many times an image (that isn’t yours) has been liked or viewed that has been posted by someone else – unless you’re looking at Instagram on a desktop computer!

You’ll be able to see WHO has liked the post in some circumstances when people you follow like an image from an account you follow.

I think this is a fabulous step from Instagram /Facebook. 

Why?

Because for many of us, (including yours truly) we’re guilty of focusing on the number of likes our content receives rather than the content itself.

Speaking of content – it’s all well and good to post the things we love but business accounts are about the customers and what *they* want. In short, post the aesthetically pleasing pictures on your personal accounts. 

I’m not saying that your business account should be a “hodge-podge” of images, but it should serve your followers well. 

Employ a local photographer for a day, have a plan of what sort of shots you want to get and then you’ll have social media content for at least a couple of months.

So, now that the number of likes has been removed, what will this mean for metrics? 

In short, nothing. 

Some influencers may argue with that point, but you’ll still have the data in the back-end, so in my opinion, it’s a moot point. 

While it’s been called a “test”, I don’t think we’ll see likes come back in the way they were.

My thoughts? In the future, I think Instagram will allow business accounts to see the numbers, perhaps not directly under the image but perhaps somewhere on the home screen.

Perhaps the whole issue is best summed up by this quote;

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” – Dyer.

 

Insta tips from our Intern

Our Intern Jordyn has created a list of the ways to make your Instagram profile stand out. 

Image quality is my number one tip. Make sure the image is high quality (not blurry) and it looks good on your grid (ask yourself does it flow with the image before it?) and matches with the overall aesthetic.
Hashtags are a great way to reach a niche audience. Use a few of the most important hashtags where appropriate within the caption and then paste up to 30 hashtags in the first comment of your post.
Stories are a fun way to engage your audience in recent activity. Share ‘behind the scenes’ content or get creative with campaigns and videos i.e. share a sneak peak of your ‘new post’ on your grid to redirect your followers to your insta page.
These Insta tips are important in boosting engagement of your targeted audience and current followers. Ensure you use the best quality camera that is available to you, a professional camera would be the ideal option for maximum aesthetics of your grid.
Instead of using ‘general‘ hashtags, use hashtags that are directed more toward the audience you want to reach i.e. hairdresser and add the location on the end and this way it is easier to reach your niche audience.
Make sure to utilize all the options that stories provide you i.e. the hands-free option is a great way to make short videos of recent activity or a way to discuss your latest project with your followers and overall making your stories look more professional.
Finally, have fun with it, you don’t want to get too bogged down in the specifics!

Instagram is Testing a New, Simpler Way to React to Stories

I’m sure we’ve all jumped on the bandwagon of reacting to friends posts and messages via an emoji on Facebook which launched in 2016. Well, Instragam is trialing just that through “stories”.

As us Instagram users already know, the option to comment on a story which goes straight to the persons DM’s (or Direct Message Inbox) or sharing a story with a friend are both great features but Instagram is making it even easier for us to react to stories through emoji.

This allows you to quickly “react” to a story through a set of emoji instead of filling up someones DM’s.

Only the person who posted the story is able to see this, appearing in the viewer’s list.

This awesome feature is only being tested in selected countries, however, if rolled out to the masses this will be the perfect way to get closer to friends and eliminate clogging up someone’s inbox and make responding quicker!

Productivity tips

Over on the Pursuit Communications Instagram account recently I shared tips on how I stay productive. (LINK)

  1. Don’t let the “E-mail Monster” control your day I prioritise emails – with categories /importance /urgency. 📧
    It keeps me on track (most of the time!) and the “email anxiety” levels to a minimum. I use different tags and then work through these according to the level of priority
  2. Pop it on silent – face down and get to work! Turning your mobile on to silent will help get the work done.
    If it helps, consider changing your voicemail message. State in your message the time you expect to return the call. Most people will understand!
  3. I 🧡 a good “to do” list
    It makes me feel organised and I can see at a glance what needs to be done.
    I break my lists down into clients and then prioritise. I highlight super important tasks and cross them off first!
    My lists are in my Kikki K planner, which goes EVERYWHERE with me.
  4.  Get up and move – your health comes first. I’m guilty of not doing this enough. I’ve recently bought a Fitbit to make sure I do move enough. Being sedentary is one of the “hazards” of my job. More often than not, I’m sitting looking at my laptop for hours on end. My Fitbit really has made a huge difference in reminding me to get up and move and achieve my daily goals. What do you do to get moving?
  5. I’m a calendar girl… 📆
    Not *that* sort of calendar girl 😝 – I put everything on my wall calendar and in my planner. No matter where I am I’ll always be able to plan and make appointments with a quick glance.

    I also colour code Birthdays,🎂 personal activities,🍾 and work duties.📝

The improvements that have helped my Instagram presence

If you’re following Pursuit Communications on Instagram (if not, you’re missing out!!) you may have noticed our posts have changed tone.

Now, I’m not talking about the “tone” of voice, I’m speaking from a visual perspective.

I’ve changed the colour of the posts for a number of reasons, here I’ve listed the top three

  1. The “Pursuit Red” background (while I LOVE it) was just too harsh on the eye
  2. The pinkish tone I’ve chosen now, is feminine, it’s calmer, it’s “me”
  3. The new tone also allows me to include (and acknowledge) a greater selection of relevant and colour suitable posts from others in the Pursuit feed

I’m also undertaking a self-audit, testing new hashtags and constantly trying to improve our metrics.

So how has this helped my business Instagram presence?

Colours play a huge factor in engagement, as does the content (but that’s for another post!), I’d like to think what I’m offering is relatable, if not helpful and finally by being able to share other posts and connect with the people behind those posts, also allows for greater connection / network building.

There are so many elements to consider when creating a post on Instagram. It really does take time and effort.

FriYAY wrap-up 28 April

Another fantastic session with lots of attendees this afternoon in my 5pm Instagram chat.

Today I discussed – “Challenges” and the benefits of running one of these for your business.

We’ve all seen those challenges on social media, three days to a great body, 14 days to become your own sales rep and so on.

Are they beneficial? If you do run one, what do you get out of it? I discussed this and more.

Key points:

*Share your “Challenge” with a specific audience, don’t just share it to everyone, make it specific and then target those customers.

*KIS – Keep It Simple – it will make the challenge more enjoyable for everyone (you and the participants)

*Prepare ALL your content in advance – This way you’ll be ready to go and won’t be frantically creating documents or content at the last minute and you’ll be lest likely to have errors!

Next up I discussed ShadowBanning on Instagram

This seems to be affecting a lot of businesses on Instagram. So what is it? It’s when your hashtags become undiscoverable, therefore your posts can’t be found and you’ll notice a decrease in the number of likes.

Key points:

*It’s POST BASED – NOT – account based

*There is a way to check if you’ve been shadowbanned, or if a particular post has been shadowbanned. CONTACT ME and I’ll send you the details.
